The Project

Ron and Rui slowed their pace down.

They were used to walking at a pace that reciprocated to their toddler’s prance. Ron realized why he was exceptionally restless on that Sunday afternoon at the mall. He had no one to look after or run behind. His three year old was spending time at her granny’s and the couple had some time to themselves. A laid back coffee brought back decade old memories. Buying gifts for friends who had visited the country from Florida was checked off the list. They slowed the pace down as they approached a stationery store. Now, even if you’re not in need of anything, a peek inside a stationery store is a must. And this time while browsing through the shelves, Ron came across something that lit a little bulb in a corner of his head.

The next day was the first working day for Ron for that year.

He got up early for his excitement could hardly let him sleep. He told himself that on the first working day of the New Year, he’s not allowed to be this enthusiastic and chuckled silently. He kissed his wife and his daughter out of habit, freshened up like a silly eight-year old boy that has gotten a new toy and rushed through rooms in search of the bag that contained all that he had got from the stationary store. It contained, among another things, a pack of little wooden clips. Like the ones that people use to attach clothes on a clothesline, only much smaller. The wooden clips had alphabets stuck on them in pastels of blues and reds. He had a plan. This plan kept him going through the day that can bog down most workaholic maniacs. This plan was his fuel.

The first half of the working day was spent battling mails and checking the list that builds up after a typical long weekend. The lunch hour was diminished to a few minutes, which surprised Rohan himself. The lunch is never rushed. Never! But Ron had to put his plan to motion, which he promptly did.

He:

  • browsed through the websites that spoke about DIY origami.

  • hurried home with some colored paper and printouts of “How to make paper cranes”

  • made the first paper crane and showed it to his daughter.

The surprise-happy look on his daughter’s face was all that he wanted from the beginning of this day. And it has provided enough fuel that’ll make him survive the New Year!
